SUMMARY:The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley
DESCRIPTION:SEASON EXTENDED! \nLast chance to see The Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley – Saturday 11th December. \nBOOK TICKETS\nThe Wickhams: Christmas at Pemberley\nby Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon\nDirected by Julie Bray \nOur 2020 production of “Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley” delighted with its romance\, intrigue\, and celebration of the Darcys’ first family Christmas at Pemberley.  \nThis charming companion piece\, “The Wickhams”\, takes us ‘downstairs’ during that same celebration. The busy preparations and a budding romance are disrupted by an unexpected mid-night visitor; certainly uninvited but not quite so unwelcome for some.  \nA touching tale exploring society\, relationships\, and responsibility; with the Darcys\, their mainstays Mrs Reynolds (housekeeper) and Brian (the footman)\, new maid Cassie\, and of course\, “The Wickhams”. \nSynopsis\nAs the events of Miss Bennet unfold upstairs at Pemberley\, the servants below stairs find themselves in the midst of a different holiday scandal. An unwelcome visitor has arrived\, disrupting holiday preparations and sowing discord among Pemberley’s residents—George Wickham. \nAs the festivities spiral into chaos\, a secreted letter may be the key to resolving old disputes and new misunderstandings. SUMMARY:Cosi
DESCRIPTION:COSI\nby Louis Nowra. Directed by Simon Corvan and Kathleen Yorston. \nA terrific play about madness\, illusion\, sanity… and theatre. \nWhat happens when you take a manic depressive\, junkie\, mute\, overeater\, doped-up musician\, obsessive compulsive and pyromaniac and try to get them to perform a Mozart opera? \nThe answer is Cosi\, the popular Australian play by Louis Nowra. \n\nSet in a psychiatric institution institution in 1971\, Cosi follows fresh-faced university graduate Lewis\, who is contracted to put on a play with some of the patients. He becomes emotionally involved with his patients-cum-actors as his production of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte lurches forward and anti-Vietnam protests rage outside. \nLouis Nowra’s semi-autobiographical play\, Così is a touching yet biting portrayal of human relationships in a Melbourne mental institution ostracised by society. \nCast\nLewis – Aaron Watson\nRoy – Charles Langford\nJulie – Lauren Flood\nCherry – Leisa Bye\nRuth – Vivien Whittle\nHenry – Damian Smith\nDoug – Daniel Coster\nZac – Brendan James\nNick – Akiwa Cavanagh\nJustin – Robert Connaughton\nLucy – Rhiannon Said\n\n\n\nContent Warning – This production contains coarse language\, sexual references and content which may cause distress to some audience members.

All the more so when we are in 1960s Italy\, with the economy booming\, incomes rising\, and more and more households acquiring consumer goods such as a fridge\, a car\, or a television set. Meanwhile\, young people are rebelling – embracing revolutionary politics\, rock music and… yoga! \nTeresa Brandolini’s mission of upholding her family’s dignity and respectability\, while the neighbours flaunt their superior spending power\, requires her to maintain an elaborate smokescreen for onlookers (‘fumo negli occhi’) – a labour of love into which her teenage daughter\, eternal-student son and long-suffering husband are co-opted. When her arch-rival\, signora De Marchi\, brags that she is off to the Isle of Capri just for the weekend\, Teresa plans her revenge\, Brandolini-style! Will she win out in the reputation stakes\, or will the antics of family members\, the maid\, and an oppressed\, non-unionised burglar spin things wildly out of her control? \nFrom the local Italian language theatre group who brought you sold out performances of One Was Nude and One Wore Tails\, Carnival of the Insects and …la gallina canta\, don’t miss Danteatro’s new comedy\, Keeping Up with the Brandolinis! SUMMARY:Hamlet
DESCRIPTION:Hamlet\nWritten by William Shakespeare. Adapted by James Elliott. \nAn all-female cast perform an adaptation of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy which explores the existential relationship between character and actor\, actor and soul\, and soul and audience. \nSomething is rotten in the state of Denmark. Upon the death of his father\, and the subsequent remarrying of his mother to his uncle\, Prince Hamlet of Denmark wrestles with the question of moral action. The appearance of a ghost resembling his late  father\, instructing him to revenge his most foul and unnatural murder\, sends Hamlet into an existential torment of action and inaction\, of revenge\, and of a mad duty bound to the purgation of his soul. Will he kill his uncle to revenge his father\, or will his inactions cost him much much more? \nThis adaptation of Hamlet\, played by an all female cast\, looks at the existential relationship between actor and character\, character and soul\, and soul and actor. The question is asked: “What if Hamlet became aware that his existence is fictional; merely a character in a play?” \nWhat follows is a perspective of Shakespeare’s tragedy aligns the motivations of our hero through the lens of a person who knows their death is eternal\, whose body is unbound\, and whose life is but a walking shadow\, a poor player who struts and frets their hour upon the stage until they are heard no more. \nCast\nHamlet: Rachel Layt\nOphelia: Bek Schmidt\nClaudius: Alexia Suttor\nGertrude: Bianca Reynolds\nPolonia: Leisa Bye\nLaertes: Megan Bennett\nRosencrantz and Guildenstern: Siobhan Finniss and Stephanie Hampson\nGravedigger/Ghost: Ellen Hardisty

SUMMARY:Italian Language Production
DESCRIPTION:TONIGHT’S SHOW IS SOLD OUT\nFriday 27 October is sold out. Limited seats remain for Saturday night’s show. Get in fast!\nAs part of celebrations for the 17th International Italian Language Week … Under the patronage of the President of the Italian Republic. \nGrowl Theatre and Danteatro Brisbane present an Italian language production (with English surtitles). \n \n\nAfter 2 successful years of bringing French language plays to the stage\, we’re proud to present a production entirely in Italian! With English translation displayed above the stage (surtitles) for those who don’t speak the language\, or for hearing impaired. \nThe production will consist of two one act plays: L’uomo nudo e l’uomo in frak (One Was Nude and One Wore Tails) and Il carnevale degli insetti (Carnival of the Insects). \nOne Was Nude and One Wore Tails\nIn this short and surprising farce by Dario Fo (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature\, 1997) we get caught up in a sequence of events that upset the monotonous everyday life of a humble streetcleaner\, as he starts to reconsider his social position in this crazy world. The farce begins with a deep philosophical conversation between two street cleaners on life and the human condition\, which leads one of them to believe that he is not just a rubbish collector but perhaps God personified! But will this be any use to him when he has to deal with a naked man hidden in his bin? The naked man in question is an aristocrat\, usually elegantly dressed in top hat and tails\, but his decisions in life – which have brought about this sneaking into the bin and hiding among the street rubbish – suggest he is perhaps not so different from everyone else. This farce has the clowning\, irreverent energy typical of Fo’s work\, but also a melancholy atmosphere\, and belongs in the realm of theatre of the absurd given the situations and problems its characters face. A light and stimulating performance that leaves us smiling\, if somewhat painfully. But isn’t that always the case when we come face to face with mere human existence? \nCarnival of the Insects\nCarnival of the Insects is a celebration that turns the world upside down. It is told from the perspective of insects: cockroaches\, bees\, butterflies\, mosquitoes and spiders share their personal journeys of pain and love\, offering insight into their coexistence with us\, and thus into many of today’s global environmental and political concerns. Contemporary Italian author Stefano Benni applies his characteristic irony and wit so that\, in this insect society\, laughter becomes an antidote to human cruelty.
